Queensland Environment Minister Andrew Powell says property owners at Charters Towers in the state's north need to think twice about taking illegal measures to control bats in the area.

Charters Towers Mayor Frank Beveridge has suggested councils such as Ipswich, Gayndah and Townsville could get together to discuss the situation with the State Government.

Mr Powell says he would support any move that works towards finding a solution to the long-running problem.

"I'm very happy to sit down with Mayor Beveridge and other mayors around this issue but I also want to take action," he said.

"I put out the offer to the mayor and to his council if there's more that we can do let me know and I want to be working there with him."

Mr Powell says the only way bats can be culled is with a lethal damage mitigation permit issued by the Government.

He says permits are granted to farmers that can prove the animals are destroying crops and for no other reason.

"If it's for other reasons I would stress that farmers need to abide by the law," he said.

"There are heavy penalties, these flying foxes are protected unfortunately under federal law as well as our state law.

"I will do everything in my power to make sure that we get an outcome for the people of Charters Towers."
