The cocos palm is an introduced palm to Australia and was once popular with gardeners in the 1960's. Because of its fast growth, rapid propagation, high maintenance and harm it can cause to native wildlife it has become classified as an environmental weed in Brisbane Australia. The Flying Fox in particular is attracted to its readily available sweet smelling fruit, but what lurks around the corner is entanglement, barbed wire entrapment, starvation and tooth damage. Louise Saunders of Batcare Brisbane www.bats.org.au sees the problems first hand on many of the horrific rescues she is called to. WARNING: some images may disturb some viewers.
