This week's #speciesspotlight is on the grey-headed flying fox (Pteropus poliocephalus)!
These cuties are megabats native to East and Southeast Australia. The grey-headed flying fox does not use echolocation to find its food, but uses its large eyes to find fruit, nectar, and pollen. The grey-headed flying fox also likes to live in large colonies in rainforests, swamps, woodlands, and sometimes in urban areas. This species is threatened by loss of its foraging and roosting habitats, and conflicts with both humans and other bats. Many bat rescue and rehabilitation groups in Australia focus on saving this bat, and help raise orphaned or abandoned pups!
