Flying Fox Advisory Committee 19/05/2016

Council’s Flying Fox Advisory Committee has been established to provide recommendations to Council to increase the understanding of issues relation to the management of Flying Foxes particularly in an urban setting

The Advisory Committee will use its expertise, influence and local knowledge to provide feedback to Council on its adopted management approach. The Advisory Committee will be responsible for;

1. Initiating and interpreting research material for the purposes of developing community education and awareness strategies and programs.
2. Undertaking projects, programs and activities that raise the awareness and education of the communities understanding of the Flying Foxes behaviour and their importance to biodiversity.
3. Providing quarterly reports to Council on the effectiveness of its adopted management approach.
4. Providing recommendations to Council on other matters pertaining to the management of Flying Foxes in the Cairns Regional Council area.

Membership of the Flying Fox Community Advisory Committee is voluntary in capacity. Members have a broad base of experience and /or expertise in Flying Fox and Wildlife management and care.

Meetings

The Flying Fox Advisory Committee meets quarterly and special meetings may be convened as required. Members of the public are welcome to attend as observers but need to provide notice of their attendance in advance by phone 4044 3701 or email m.kentwell@cairns.qld.gov.au

Management of Flying Foxes General Policy (136.0 KB)
This policy outlines Cairns Regional Council’s position on Flying Fox Management within designated urban areas in accordance with relevant legislation. The provisions apply to defined urban areas designated within Council’s planning scheme as having a residential or commercial purpose including a buffer of one kilometre. The defined urban areas will collectively be referred to as Urban Flying Fox Management Areas (UFFMA).
