BAT MANIA: Grey-headed flying foxes soar over the Batemans Bay Water Gardens yesterday.
While this might spark a bat stat spat between those who like Batemans Bay’s grey-headed flying foxes and those who don’t, National Park and Wildlife Service officers counted the “camp” population at between 1000 and 1500 animals yesterday.
Batemans Bay residents are reminded that the bats are a native and protected species, and any effort made to hurt them, kill them or simply to get them to go somewhere else is illegal.
This includes Meat Loaf CDs, footage of The Shire, shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles, “Love it or Leave” bumper stickers and stuffed toys depicting the London Olympic mascots.
