Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and ConservationThe Antillean fruit-eating bat (Brachyphylla cavernarum) is a leaf-nosed bat found in the Caribbean from Puerto Rico to Barbados. These bats roost in buildings, caves, crevices, cliffs, and dense tree tops. They feed on a variety of fruits including papaya, mango and royal palm, and will also consume pollen, nectar and insects. They can be quite aggressive when feeding and have been known to bite or hit one another when competing for food. These bats can be hosts for parasites called bat flies. You can see them on the bats in the picture below (small orange/yellow spots). This species is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
