FEDERAL Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon has called for Hunter residents in areas popular with flying foxes to make submissions to a Parliamentary Inquiry by the end of Friday.
Last week at the inquiry into flying fox management in the eastern states, the house committee on the environment and energy called for submissions, and Mr Fitzgibbon urged Hunter residents not to miss the Friday deadline.
“I’ve written to our local councils asking them to consider making a contribution,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“I’d also like local residents to do the same. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or technical, just provide a few sentences about how the local bat colonies have affected you. It’s important that members of the committee hear from real people.”
Submissions can be written by close of business on Friday at aph.gov.au/flyingfoxes.
The committee is examining the status of the flying foxes in eastern Australia, the manner in which species are listed, whether the listing is scientifically robust and the circumstances in which they may be delisted.
In May, a colony of grey-headed flying foxes at Cessnock that has vexed some residents was set fire to four times.
