A TAMWORTH group has called for the state’s environmental watchdog to test the air quality around the flying fox infested areas.
The Flying Fox Action Committee Tamworth (FFACT) is continuing to campaign on a number fronts, rolling on with its petition and now lobbying council to get the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) involved.
Mr Cox said FFACT is yet to hear back from council and would look to arrange a meeting with the mayor about its air-quality proposal.
Despite reports earlier this week the region’s flying fox population had almost halved, dropping below 80,000, Mr Cox said support has been “overwhelming”.
He said the group’s petitions had already pulled-in 1200 signatures with the goal of reaching 10,000 to ensure the flying fox issue is debated on the floor of NSW parliament.
Mr Cox backed the motion council intends on taking to Local Government NSW conference in December, calling on the peak body to lobby the state government flying fox management regulations.
He said it supported a motion being taken in by Nambucca shire which seeks to allow a council to take immediate action to move the flying foxes on before a colony became established.
