These images were taken on a wonderful 'bat trip' that I made with Dr Les Hall as part of a series of expeditions to photograph Australia's bat fauna. These images were made in north eastern Queensland in an out of the way region were few people ever go. This simply stunning animal for me rates very high as one of the most exciting encounters I have ever had with a wide animal. They are widespread across northern Australia, from arid areas to rainforest. The Ghost Bat is the largest microbat in Australia and the second-largest in the world. Its pale fur and almost translucent wing membranes add to its grotesque appeal. This unique species is considered to be Australia’s iconic bat. They are efficient hunters feeding on birds, frogs, small lizards, insects and small mammals like other micro bats and rodents. Their main threats in terms predators & threats are Quolls, Dingoes and pythons. Loss of old mines and caves, barbwire fences, tree clearing and wildfires. Here is a ink to the Wild guide to Australian Bats which is an excellent pocket sized introduction to all groups of Australian Bats. http://www.pascalpress.com.au/Wild-Australia-Guide-Bats-p/9781741935141.htm Another Link to the final recently released 'A Natural History of Australian Bats that I worked on with Dr's Les Hall and Greg Richards. http://www.publish.csiro.au/pid/6783.htm CSIRO's 'lightbulb moment' in hendra research that could lead to resolving the hendra virus currently effecting horses & humanshttp://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2012/s3559691.htm — 2012 IS THE YEAR OF THE BAT (14 photos)
