BATS don't like bagpipes. That's the conclusion of the North Burnett Deputy Mayor who used the piercing sound to move them on from Mundubbera, west of Maryborough.

Faye Whelan blasted the sound of bagpipes from her car stereo early in the morning last week.

"I was looking for a noisy apparatus to humanely move the bats," she said.

"All I had was a bagpipes CD in the car.

"It worked.

"They must not like bagpipes."

Ms Whelan has been helping to disperse colonies made up of more than 20,000 bats in the Mundubbera area and the number of bats in the township has been reduced to about 5000 in the past week.

The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection advises when shooing bats from residential homes and urban areas to disperse them early in the morning using smoke, light, and noise.
