Camilla, a Malayan flying fox (the largest bat species in the world)
The Malayan flying fox was said to be common seasonally in Singapore, particularly during the fruiting season (Yang et al., 1990: 4). However it seems to be observed on rare occasions in recent years. As no flying fox roost has been recorded in Singapore at present, this species is regarded as a visitor (Baker & Lim, 2012: 163) from neighbouring areas, possibly Johor to the north or the Riau Islands to the south. The featured individual could be headed for its roost outside Singapore after the previous night’s foraging in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. Apart from the present sighting, one flying fox was observed over at adjacent Bukit Brown in March 2012 (Hall, 2012).
