NSW Premier Mike Baird has today announced $2.5 million to bat dispersal in the Batemans Bay CBD and surrounding areas.
Eurobodalla Shire Council acting general manager Lindsay Usher said work had started on clearing vegetation within a 30-metre perimeter of the bat colony.
Batemans Bay was on today’s political trail for Mr Baird, who joined Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Merimbula and Eden earlier in the day.
Mr Baird visited the Batemans Bay Water Garden, took a tour of the Ralston Brothers oyster lease on the Clyde River and attended a meet and greet at the Batemans Bay Soliders Club.
During Mr Baird’s visit to the Water Garden, Danielle Smith, who lives near the bat colony in Herron Road, told the premier about the distress it is causing her young family.
“My son won’t even sleep in his own bed because of the noise,” Ms Smith said.
Mr Baird said he understood the importance of the issue to the people in the area.
“We are very involved in the sense today we are announcing 2.5 million dollars,” he said.
“There is no perfect science to this, which is one of the challenges.
“What we learn from this not only applies here, but to the rest of the state. There are a couple of other hot spots.”
Eurobodalla Shire Councillor Milton Leslight told Mr Baird the bats were having a “significant” impact on the economy.
