IF you hate bats, these baby orphans might just be cute enough to change your mind.
Little Thor, four-weeks-old and Meep, a five-month-old red bat, were rescued by the Australian Bat Clinic which rehabilitates sick or injured bats on the Gold Coast.
Based in Advancetown, director of the wildlife trauma centre, Trish Wimberley, said as spring warmed, up to 30 per cent more bats would be in need of care due to heat stress and snake attacks.
“This is one of the busiest times of year for us as the weather heats up,” Ms Wimberley said.
“Bats can get quite stressed in the heat.
“It’s probably the biggest concern on the Gold Coast when it comes to sick and injured bats.”
Other common ways bats suffer injury is from becoming caught in barbed wire or fishing line.
Thor, a grey-headed bat, [he is a Black] was dropped to the centre with a broken leg.
Ms Wimberley said he believed the small bat was delivered by its mother who knew her baby would receive appropriate care.
“Bats are highly intelligent,” she said.
“We like to think she knew we were a bat hospital which is why she dropped him off for us to care for.

“Little Meep was one of the hundreds of little red flying fox babies that suffered from the cold during the winter.
“He, along with many of his siblings, had pneumonia so he needed intensive care.
“These little guys will be in care for around 16 to 20 weeks where they will progress through baby stage on to kindy kids and then into baby bat crèche, where all the little orphans learn that they are big bats and need to join the wild bats out there.”
