Age: Juvenile Sex: Female Weight: 8gms
Found: Dobby's mother Georgia was found at the base of a tree after being attacked by a dog in Hamilton, Queensland.
Transported to: A kind member of the public transported the flying fox to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for emergency medical attention.
Veterinary Assessment: Dr Rebecca and her team examined Georgia and confirmed that she had suffered severe trauma to her wing membrane. The team also discovered that she was pregnant, almost full term, with a tiny pup growing in her swollen abdomen. Sadly, Georgia's injuries were too severe for the team to save her, but there was still hope for her unborn pup.
Treatment: The hospital team rushed Georgia into surgery and successfully delivered Dobby the black flying fox pup via caesarean. Weighing only 8 grams and measuring 66mm in length, the premature pup was in good health and was strong enough to breath on her own from her first breath. The team wrapped Dobby in a bat wrap and gave her a pacifier to comfort her, before placing her in a warm humidicrib in the Nursery.
Outcome: A wildlife carer who has much experience with premature pups will care for Dobby until she is ready to be released into the wild.
AZWH Fact: From two to three months of age, Dobby will be able to fly and begin to learn life skills, before becoming independent three months later.
