Age: Juvenile Sex: Female Weight: 70gms
Found: Ebony was found in Palmwoods, Queensland after she was attacked by a Currawong and fell to the ground.
Transported to: A wildlife rescuer specifically trained in the handling of bats came to the young flying fox's aid and transported her the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.
Veterinary Assessment: Dr. Wendy and her team were on duty when Ebony was admitted to the hospital and completed a thorough examination. Thankfully there were no abnormalities observed on the x-ray scan and her body score was good.
Treatment: Dr. Wendy administered fluids to help prevent dehydration and made her comfortable by wrapping her in a 'bat wrap' and providing her with a pacifier, whilst she waited for a wildlife carer specialising in the care of bats to take her on.
Outcome: Ebony will remain in the care of a registered wildlife carer until she's fully grown and completed her rehabilitation.
AZWH Fact: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has seen a spike in flying fox admissions following the start of spring. This is the time of year when flying fox pups are born in the treetops and cling to their mother's body for two to three weeks for warmth and to feed. At this age, they are vulnerable to natural predators such as birds and reptiles and are often affected by extreme weather conditions
