The decline and fall of the Sky puppies
"I visited the property of Leanne Robertson, a wildlife carer based in Logan Reserve on Brisbane’s southern outskirts. In a large, leafy aviary just a few metres from the verandah of her home, she held two groups of Flying-foxes. On one side were a mixed group of Black and Grey-headed Flying-foxes, chattering and clambering about. On the other was a group of 11 Spectacled Flying-foxes, huddled closely together.
The Spectacled Flying-foxes were imports from the Wet Tropics, and were due to be shipped back the next day, all together in a single crate (if that sounds cruel, it’s not: separating the closely bonded group would cause them terrible, possibly fatal stress). Carers in the tropics are currently overwhelmed with Flying-foxes, and Leanne’s group had come to her via Wildlife Rescue Queensland in an attempt to spread the load." - Andrew Stafford
