TRIMMING of trees surrounding Cairns’ City Library, containing a flying fox colony, has been scheduled for tomorrow.
Cairns Regional Council is preparing to remove dead and low-hanging limbs on trees to promote healthy growth of the trees, and to improve public safety.
The work will take place tomorrow, Thursday, and then Monday and Wednesday next week.
The council has received approval from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to undertake the works.
The council has also assured a qualified ecologist and wildlife carer will be on site throughout the works.
“To minimise impact on the flying fox colony, one tree will be pruned per day with a day of rest in between pruning each tree,” a council spokeswoman said.
“This will also assist in preventing the flying foxes from resting in other areas of the CBD.”
The council was fined was fined $15,000 for disturbing flying foxes and trimming trees around the library in 2014.
The gardening contractor which undertook the works, Garden Friendly Mulchers, was also fined $3000 and a further $1500 in court costs.
Conservationists condemned the initial tree trimming, which took place on council-owned property.
