Info on Bats | Microbat Girl Joanna Haddock
" I am a PhD student at The University of Sydney, studying the effects of artificial lighting on microbats and other nocturnal fauna. I am based in the Integrative Ecology Lab, with the supervision of Associate Professor Dieter Hochuli and Dr Caragh Threlfall.
My research is focusing on the effect of artificial light at night on nocturnal fauna. I survey microbats, insects and other nocturnal arboreal mammals across the Sydney region to uncover the mechanisms with which artificial light can affect trophic interactions of nocturnal ecosystems. "
" Past Research
I started my academic life studying a BSc Psychology in the Sheffield, UK, and specialised in the neurological and structural abnormalities associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and other neurodevelopmental disorders.
I completed a MSc in Environmental Science in Sydney, Australia, focusing on the urban landscape traits that drive differences in the communities of urban microbats. I specifically looked at the effect of artificial light on microbats. My findings were consistent with previous research, and showed that different species of microbat have vastly different reactions to artificial light – some exploit the increased insect resources, and some are completely excluded.
